This is the album that started it all. The Dadsrecords.net project would have never happened if it wasn't for this odd, brilliant, and influential masterpiece. It's one of those records that is constantly being rediscovered. You almost feel proud when you know about it. In a way, I think my dad was showing off when he brought this one out a few years ago. We started at the top, and right away I think this guy sounds like Neil Diamond. That is, if Neil Diamond was the lead in a Broadway show. (They didn't make The Jazz Singer into a play did they? Please don't.) Ackles' songs are dark stories, his music mostly buoyant; but every now and then he tips that pretty lightness on its end and surprises you with something truly heartbreaking. opens quietly, but when it opens up, complete with a Dark Side of the Moon-esque backup singer, it feels like your brain is swelling - the best case of encephalitis you've ever had.
