This is the album that started it all. The Dadsrecords.net project would have never happened if it wasn't for this odd, brilliant, and influential masterpiece. It's one of those records that is constantly being rediscovered. You almost feel proud when you know about it. In a way, I think my dad was showing off when he brought this one out a few years ago.  OF COURSE I had never heard of it. Ackles died in 1999, and hadn't released a record since '73. Upper hand: Dad.

We started at the top, and right away I think this guy sounds like Neil Diamond.  That is, if Neil Diamond was the lead in a Broadway show. (They didn't make The Jazz Singer into a play did they? Please don't.) Ackles' songs are dark stories, his music mostly buoyant; but every now and then he tips that pretty lightness on its end and surprises you with something truly heartbreaking. Take a listen to Another Friday Night:

[ mp3 ]: David Ackles - Another Friday Night

This is the lush kind of music that sounds its best on vinyl!  Another Friday Night opens quietly, but when it opens up, complete with a Dark Side of the Moon-esque backup singer, it feels like your brain is swelling - the best case of encephalitis you've ever had.

Take a listen to the rest on lala. It's really like nothing else I've heard before. What does it remind you of? Let me know in the comments!

Wow. That is fairly amazing. Thank you for the introduction. It's like late 60's Scott Walker mixed with early Tom Waits. Love this site.

I assume you've seen 30th Century Man? If not, you should. It made me really appreciate Scott Walker. Also, what a well dressed man!

I haven't seen it (didn't know of it's existence), but I intend to fix that. I really like his first four solo albums. Thanks for the heads up.

No problem - I think you can stream it on Netflix if you have that technological capability...
